Mechanism of Nerve Growth Factor GDNF Elucidates Ibogaine’s Persistence and Immune Modulatory Effects

This slide presentation/lecture explores ibogaine’s persistent “resprouting” of dopaminergic dendrites and receptors via the nerve growth factor Glia-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) as a marker for a broader REM-mimetic neuro-plasticity with outcomes ranging from behavioral to immune-system benefits.

Ibogaine shares robust receptor effects with both Salvia Divinorum (kappa opiate agonism,  down-regulating tolerance via  beta-arrestin) and with ketamine (n-Methyl-d-Aspartate antagonism, curbing narcotic withdrawal and super-sensitization to stimulants). However, neither of these account for ibogaine’s signature long-lasting effect against cocaine/alcohol (Bruno Rasmussen Chaves, 2014) or opiate abuse (Thomas Kingsley Brown, 2017).

In a series of papers (2005, 6, 10) Dorit Ron et al established that ibogaine unexpectedly expresses the nerve growth factor (GDNF), re-sprouting chronically desensitized dopamine receptors, replacing the neural deficit experienced as craving. Not only that, the 10-fold GDNF spike engendered by ibogaine back-signals to cell nuclei to make more GDNF, setting up a persistent, benign auto-regulatory loop that accounts for ibogaine’s  persistent effect. This is confirmed by the recent discovery that as little as 4 mgs of ibogaine twice a day for 28 days significantly reverses Parkinson’s degeneration (case studies, unpublished), since one typical effect of end-stage methamphetamine abuse on dopamine function is Parkinsonianism.

Interestingly, the thesis  that ibogaine is a true oneiric which one experiences as “a dream body in a dream landscape” (Alper, Lotsof 2009) as elaborated in Carl Anderson’s prescient paper (MAPS, 1998) on ibogaine and fetal REM is buttressed by the fact that knock-out mice without a GDNF gene have no adrenals because they are born without kidneys. This raises intriguing issues not only of REM as orchestrator of fetal/neonatal growth, but the extreme usefulness of a true REM-mimetic in modulating the immune systems of adults seen in ibogaine amelioration of auto-immune disorders such as MS and Crohn’s disease (case studies), and some complications of AIDS.

Ibogaine healing the brain

"Especially important for our ongoing research is that ibogaine can promote the release of small proteins called “neurotrophic factors” in some parts of the brain.
What are these neurotrophic factors? These are substances that promote survival, repair and protection processes in the brain tissue."

Global Ibogaine Conference Tepoztlan

At last the documentary from this phenomenal conference this spring :) Ibogaine is a derivative of the unique and powerful healing plant iboga, "one of the only medications that orally stimulate the production of Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), a hormone that helps stimulate the growth of new neutrons in the brain" Jonathan Dickinson More about this and much more in this video.

Iboga sustainability project

In these auspicious black pots in my garden are iboga seeds from iboga fruit, waiting to sprout. Bringing these fruits and their seeds to Mexico from Africa is part of a sustainability project by GITA (Global Ibogaine Therapy Alliance). The picture on the right shows iboga fruits. There is ever increasing demand for iboga and its derivative ibogaine as the world discovers its incredible value for human development. https://www.ibogainealliance.org/iboga/sustainability/

Psychoactive Substances Act

A new law, the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016,  comes into effect in the UK in April, it was given royal assent on 28th January.
It prohibits any substance  that is psychoactive, with the exceptions of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, controlled drugs, approved medicinal products, and foods. It includes tryptamines such as you find in ayahuasca herbs. Ayahuasca will be banned as there’s no history of medicinal use in the UK, but products such as St John Wort etc will probably not be affected. Ibogaine, the natural remedy for addiction is covered by the ban.

At one stage, while the psychoactive substances bill was going through Parliament, it was decided to exclude natural substances from the bill. Much of the healing community breathed a sigh of relief, but these plant medicines became included in the ban again later.

The full details can be accessed here.
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2016/2/contents/enacted

As of this April, when this Act comes into effect, ibogaine will be effectively prohibited in the United Kingdom. Information has been updated on the Global Ibogaine Therapy Alliance legal status map. http://www.ibogainealliance.org/ibogaine/law
They say “This is further evidence of How Prohibition is Depriving Society from Essential Medicines and Therapeutic Toolshttp: http://www.ibogaineconference.org/blog/how-prohibition-is-depriving-society-from-essential-medicines-and-therapeutic-tools/

the strange history of ibogaine

Fascinating account of the history of ibogaine by Britta Wollman Love. "it’s a hope in a world where there isn’t much hope to be found."

"The story .... is a little shocking ...It makes one question the most basic assumptions commonly held about how rational science and modern medicine operate, to find out that a substance like ibogaine could go through all this scrutiny and still end up far from the hands of those who need it. Here is the story of how we almost cured addiction."

ibogaine and temple plant medicines together

There seems to be a new trend beginning, which makes completes sense.

Shea Prueger, currently the world's youngest ibogaine provider, is teaming with Subin, a former  monk and expert in revitalizing herbal tonic medicine to create a new kind of centre.

"While in the temple, Subin became much more interested in plant medicine. So, when he left the temple, he approached me about working together. When we officially open, ibogaine will still be the main focus. However, we will also be offering snakebite remedies and all of the temple detox and revitalization concoctions he has mastered. We’ve secured a two-acre piece of land with a beautiful six-bedroom property in a semi-remote area of the island. We will be growing all of the herbs ourselves. This new center, while still an ibogaine center, will be incorporating methods important to Thai culture. It will be a center that is respectful and essential to the community allowing us to be here."

iboga 101

"Ask a Bwiti tribesman to define iboga and he may talk of a super sentient being whose role is to guide humanity, accessibility to whom is threatened by the world’s increasing demand for its earthly expression.

Ask a recovering heroin addict the same question and they may describe a knockout punch from a velvet glove that renders dope sickness a bad memory. Answers from first world twenty-somethings seeking the latest kick may range from “something that just made me vomit for 15 hours” to “a life changing sacrament that smashed open my consciousness and lifted the veil on the true nature of existence.”

Nowadays, whether due to publicized celebrity rehab sessions, psychonauts seeking the latest thing, or simply the widening of mankind’s spiritual void, iboga is out of the closet. As iboga’s popularity grows, so does the confusion regarding what iboga is, what it is not, and what purpose the different products on the market best serve. The following information will attempt to address the latter while remaining mindful that the ineffable mysteries of it’s subject combined with the highly personal nature of the user experience render certain assertions herein to be subjective."

more about global ibogaine conference

press release:

Between March 14-16th, 2016 in Tepoztlan, Mexico, the 2016 Global Ibogaine Conference will convene experts from around the world to discuss ibogaine therapy, the climate of global drug policy, and the sustainability and traditional uses of Tabernanthe iboga.

Since the 1980s ibogaine, the primary psychoactive extract of T. iboga, has increasingly been used experimentally in the detoxification from opiates and as a treatment for substance use disorders. Early clinical trials confirmed some very promising initial reports, but were later suspended because of funding and litigation. Ibogaine’s use has continued to grow, from the early peer-to-peer drug user networks, to today when ibogaine is administered under compassionate access or experimental legal frameworks in some progressive hospitals, medical centers, retreats, and private therapeutic practices around the world. The landscape of ibogaine research and practice has changed dramatically. Today clinical investigations are being re-initiated looking not only at its use in addiction treatment, but also other conditions.

The event is a partnership between The Global Ibogaine Therapy Alliance (GITA), the International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research & Service (ICEERS), and Espolea (Mexico City). It is the 5th international conference hosted by GITA, and the first major public conference in the series. It features influential speakers from across the fields of psychology, harm reduction, and drug policy reform, and ibogaine research, including Claudio Naranjo, Stanton Peele, Kenneth Alper, Jeffrey Kamlet, Andrew Tatarski, and many others.

The conference pre-session from March 12-13th, 2016 will be the first ever Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification for Ibogaine Therapists. course, available through GITA, goes beyond the standards emergency protocols certified by the American Heart Association to discuss practical concerns for monitoring patients in a clinical setting. It will also include important changes to ACLS interventions and appropriate medications to avoid negative interaction, in order to prevent emergency situations during ibogaine administration.

Registration for the event as well as the pre- and post-conference sessions, will open on August 1st, 2015. For more information about the conference, including confirmed speakers, program outline, and to sign up for email updates, please visit: http://www.ibogaineconference.org

global ibogaine conference

I am so excited about this event and have booked my early bird ticket already.  I am thrilled that this conference at this location too, , because this village is somewhere I am very keen to visit.  There seems to be a constellation of ibogaine activity in Mexico, although the root it comes from, iboga, actually grows in Africa.  It makes sense though because of the character of Mexico, in terms of both the people and the land.  You can read an article I recently wrote about ibogaine treatment here: http://foodforconsciousness.co.uk/ibogaine-miracles/.  I am available by phone or email to advise anyone considering this kind of experience (contact details in the article).

Ibogaine as a Contemporary Therapeutic Tool

Between March 14-16th, 2016, the Global Ibogaine Conference will convene experts from around the world to discuss ibogaine therapy, the climate of global drug policy, and the sustainability and traditional uses of Tabernanthe iboga.

Since the 1980s ibogaine has increasingly been used experimentally in the detoxification from opiates and as a treatment for substance use disorders. The landscape of ibogaine research and practice has changed dramatically. Today clinical investigations are being re-initiated looking not only at its use in addiction treatment, but also other conditions.

The conference will be held at the Jardin de la Abundancia hotel in Tepoztlan, Mexico.

Tepoztlan, also known locally as “Pueblo Magico,” is a beautiful small village located just more than an hour outside of Mexico City in the state of Morelos. It’s home to Tepozteco, an ancient Aztec pyramid that overlooks the valley from the surrounding mountains, as well as a large market that expands from the plaza to fill the town’s main streets during the weekend.

iboga nights

ibogaine molecule

British documentary about the amazing healing power of iboga/ibogaine, a powerful remedy for addiction and trauma as well as having other psychotherapeutic benefits. Recommend that treatment be done under the care and medical supervision of an an experienced professional licensed provider, in order for it to be both safe and effective.  This film is gripping viewing and also very informative.

An important point to make is that while ibogaine can shift addiction and trauma, there is more work to be done afterwards to make a fulfilling life.

rite of passage

Ibogaine takes the human who journeys with it into a  deep revelatory experience, a review of life situations including traumas, with the necessary detachment to process them.  Its addiction healing powers were first discovered in the industrialised world accidentally and serendipitously in 1962  by New Yorker Howard Lotsof, who is featured in this documentary.  He was addicted to heroin at the time, took a dose of ibogaine (estimated to be about 500 mg) for fun then realised he had lost interest in drugs and had a new life path.

Ibogaine has been traditionally extracted from the bark of the iboga plant by the Bwiti people in Gabon.  Nowadays there are alternative ways of producing it too.

It is the only known effective treatment for several addictions.  Perhaps because it offers a true rite of initiation; the experience and connection that is being truly sought. The way it, within hours, relieves withdrawal symptoms and addiction is becoming widely known.  It is important to take initiatory doses of ibogaine in safe conditions (there are treatment centres around the world) and also move forward afterwards into a new phase of life because that is what is really being sought in a rite of passage.
